Final Project: Stop Motion

INSTRUCTIONS

Final Project: Stop Motion

The first step to our final project were to watch stop motion videos and shortlist 3 of our favourite videos. We were then to analyse the style, art direction and character design.

Figure 1.1 Chosen Stop Motion Video (1)

How I interpret the video:

Watermelon = Earth
Watermelon cloud and then Rain on egg
Egg cracks and Apple grows trees
Hazelnut turns into Popcorn
Orange pac-man and Pear balloons
Vegetables coming together and then Orange

This video is captivating and eye-catching throught the entire video especially it has really nice choice of colour scheme. The way it present is really creative and the style of the video is also clean and minimalistic. The editing of each scenes are extremely detailed enhancing the movement throughout the video. This stop motion has an abstract way of presenting like making use of the seeds of the watermelon to present the rain and the cottons representing the clouds. The video gives you a sense of feeling like you can interpret it anyway you want or it could be no meaning at all. Overall, I really really like the creative way of this video like it has no boundaries within and anything could appear in the video.

Figure 1.2 Chosen Stop Motion Video (2)

This is a short stop motion film about an M'n'Ms. I think it is a nice animation which has creative ideas. The story is about one of the M'n'M desperately struggling to fit in and belong to the group. The moral of this short stop motion animation video makes a lot of sense and I think it has a cute way of presenting the story. The ending part of the story is also amusing and unexpectable. Besides that, I like how it has several different shots like the Close-Up shots and Wide shots making the whole video more interesting.

First of all, I like the grainy effects of the entire video making it looks like some old-school style of animation. Although the way of presenting is simple, but I really like how it gives me a very chill feeling. It has great background music making the overall video more relaxing. Lastly, I like how it this stop motion includes different shots like the Close-Up shots and Wide shots making the whole video not so boring.

Stop motion Test Shoots

We were to do a stop motion test shoot before doing the final shot. I decided to make a short stop motion film of less than 1 minute with smooth stop motion flow featuring the patterns of the insides of fruits and vegetables. My video setting will be a clean background and environment. I will also choose a nice background music to make the video more interesting.
I decided to use the green screen effect for my stop motion video to achive a cleaner and more minimalistic background.

On May 29, I went to the supermarket to get the items I need for the first test shoots. I've gotten some chillis, carrots and lemons. All of them are bright in colours as I want to make a video with strong colour contrast by using the green screen effects and change the original backgrounds.

Equipment/Props:

  • Phone
  • Tripod Stand
  • Object materials (Food)
  • Editing softwares (Photoshop, Premiere Pro)
  • Green Board

The stop motion required a huge amount of efforts as I had to slice them in thin slices and take picture of the object frame by frame. After taking around hundreds of the footages, I then have to edit them in Adobe Photoshop to achive the best result to use the green screen effect. Below is the demonstrations of photo editing in Photoshop:

I have to edit the Exposure, Brightness, Shadows, Contrasts, Saturation, Black Point,  Sharpness and so on for every of the picture I've taken to maximize the use of the green screen effect. This took me a huge amount of time as I have to edit them one by one.

After Editing:

After applying Green Screen Effect:

This is to enhance the the colour contrast of the overall video and make use of the colours to make the video more eye-catching.

REFLECTIONS

I like how we are able to do our own theme and idea for this project. I'm happy that I chose this theme as I will be able to learn more about how the Green Screen work. To be able to make a stop motion out of myself was a great achievement for me and this is my very first experience creating a stop motion from scratch.

I had lots of struggles yet it was fun during the process of completing this project. I also got to eat lots of fruits as the materials of my projects are mainly edible so they wouldn't go to waste. This project really requires patience, hard work, huge amount of time and precision, the position of every frames have to match as one wrong move will affect the video as it wouldn't play smooth from one frame to another.

Through this project, I have learned that Stop Motion requires a lot of frames and workload although the end product only comes out with a video in less that a minute. Overall, this module was fun and and I really did enjoy myself completing this project.
