Task 3: Type Exploration and Application

INSTRUCTIONS

Task 3 - Type Exploration and Application

For this exercise, we are to develop a font that is intended to solve a larger problem or meant to be part of a solution in the area of our interest. It could be graphic design, animation, new media or entertainment design or any other related area not necessarily reflecting our specialisation.

Ideation - Proposal of 4 ideas

The final idea (idea 4) came up from the third idea. I didn't want to go with the 3rd idea which is to design a typeface for the movie Pet Sematary because I've already tried designing a horror typeface in the past tasks. So for this task I'm going to design a cute type face which can be used in pet shop signboard, pet tags or anything related to the pets. When thinking of pets, people usually think about furry cats and dogs, so I wanted to create a furry font type with curvy lines.

First Draft

Figure 1.0 First attempt

I've used the 3D tools in Adobe Illustrator to made the first attempt. During the feedback session, Mr Vinod said this is strictly not allowed as I'm using a already-existing typeface as the base to make another typeface. I have to develop a new typeface from scratch.

After the feedback session, I decided to use the above typeface I created using the 3D tools as my reference and work on a new typeface from scratch.

After I've created all alphabets and symbols, I started to generate the fonts using fontlab.

After completing the alphabets, numbers and some of the symbols, I exported the font so that people can download and make use of them.

After I had exported the font, I started with the font application which includes pets shop signboard, pet tags and poster about pets.

The font type of a pet shop signboard I saw another day was a little too boring and not attractive to me, so I decided to create a font type which people will straight away think about furry pets when they see it.

Same as the sign board, I think the typeface used in most pet tags are just boring. The typeface I created can be used on pet tags.

FEEDBACKS

Week 10
General Feedback

We have to quickly decide our idea since and show as much progression as possible next week.

Specific Feedback

Have not decide on idea yet.

Week 11
General Feedback

Continue working.

Specific Feedback

I've used the 3D tools in Adobe Illustrator to made the first attempt. Mr Vinod said this is strictly not allowed as I'm using a already-existing typeface as the base to make another typeface. I have to develop a new typeface from scratch.

Week 12
General Feedback

Many has not started to work on the application, have to start it as soon as possible.

Specific Feedback

Have to work faster.

Week 13

General Feedback

Have to focus on the typeface and not include too much graphics.

Specific Feedback

I've included too much graphics in my application.

REFLECTIONS

Based on my Experience, Observations and Findings respectively.

During the ideation process, I have too much of random ideas going on my mind so it was difficult for me to decide on which idea to work on as I didn't have an idea that I like the most. After figuring about my interest, which reffered to pet shop as I like little animals, I decided to go with the idea of creating a typeface about pets.

There are not much rules on this task yet we have to be careful with all the strokes and widths to create a consistent typeface.

After completing this task, I found that creativity and how we perform it are really important in order to create a good design.

FURTHER READINGS

The Vignelli Canon by Massimo Vignelli

Discipline - A set of self-imposed rules, parameters which we operate
Besides that, every details of a design process is equally important as the end result is the sum of all the details involved in the creative process. Without discipline there is no good design regardless of its style. Discipline is also an attitude providing the capacity of controlling the creative work so that it has continuity of ointent throughout rather than fragmentation

Appropriateness - The search for the specific of any given problem
Appropriateness directs us to the right kind of media, right kind of materials, right kind of scale,  right kind of expression, color and texture.

Ambiguity

The author has a positive interpretation of ambiguity, he interpreted ambiguity as the possibility of being read indifferent ways and each complimenting another to enrich the subject and give more depth. Even though ambiguity has positive impact in design, great caution is recommended as if ambiguity is not well measured, it will be converted to a sign of discontinuity and lack of control.

Visual Power

Clear concepts expressed in beautiful form and colour, where every element expresses the content in the most forceful way can create a good design.

A collection of experiences

The process of sifting and selecting extends to everything around us - colors, textures, materials involving every detail, thickness, width, and height. After being processed, analysed, evaluated and finally, they filled in our memory according our canon but not in an arbitrary way. Freedom of choice can only happen with knowledge and that is an ongoing process that requires structure and determination, not happenstance.

The author concluded this book with his own thoughts - "As much as I love things in flux, I love them within a frame or reference - a consistent reassurance that at least and at last I am the one responsible for every detail. " As I've struggled with the restrictions and rules of design, this book hit me hard by giving me another way of thinking of the restrictions as the  responsibilities for design.
