Lectures

Week 05 (16.09.2021)
Rhythm and Movement

In today's lecture, Ms Noranis further explained about the composition - rhythm and movement in design. It is composed by value tones, shapes, positive and negative space and spatial depth. I also learned a new Italian term which is frequently used in design, the chiaroscuro which literally means light-dark. In paintings the description refers to clear tonal contrasts which are often used to suggest the volume and modelling of the subjects depicted.

Ms Noranis also show us some paintings regarding the positive and negative space and the spatial depth. Below is one of my favourite painting by Jason Anderson. I like how the painting shows a sense of depth by using different tones of colours.

During Tutorial session, Ms Jennifer demonstrated the way of changing different brightness and hue of an image to create a completely different outcome based on chiaroscuro.

Then, Ms Noranis begin the briefing of our Task 2 - Poster: Decisive Moment. We have to create a minimalist poster and animate it based on the movie. We may use any known narrative from published media like movies, animation, books, comics, manga etc. The phrase 'decisive moment' means that we are to capture the unique and meaningful moment of a specific scene or moment.

Visual Research

I decided to go with my all time favourite movie, Ms Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. It is a fantasy film directed by the famous Tim Burton based on the novel of the same name. The movie is about a young boy discovers a house full of children with natural powers and soon he found out that he had the responsibility to protect the home from terrifying monsters called Hollowgasts which feed on the peculiar children's eyeballs.

The scene I chose is the scene when the scary monster Hollowgast opens up its mouth and uses its tongues to stab the eyeball. It is an ironic scene to me because when I watch this movie, I got the most intense and nervous at this scene. The audience gets nervous when seeing this scene and not knowing what will be the next scary move of the monster.

I also search for some of the reference for me to begin with my own minimalist poster.

Sketches

Figure 1.5.7 Initial sketches of Hollowgast

Initially I chose dark purple as my background colour as it looks more intense and I think it suits the monster better. Also, I added one of the movie quotes into it.

After trying around with different colour backgrounds, I decided to go with this colour. Different with dark purple background, I am surprised how the bright colour brings out a completely different outcome to the poster. It looks clearer and more eye-catching to me now.

As for the animation, I decided to make the eyeball bouncing.

Reflections

I had to say this was really a tough project to me especially the animation part but I did learned a lot of new skills throughout the process. I'm more familiar with the tools in Adobe Illustrator after completing this task. Moreover, I learned how to animate my poster using Photoshop which is a new skill for me. Frame by frame animation really takes a lot of time and requires great patience. Even though there was lots of struggles and procrastination on this task, I am glad that I finally completed it and I hope that I can do better on the next task.
